The Siemens 3RT2646-1AB05 is a SIRIUS capacitor contactor, size S3, designed specifically for switching capacitor banks in power factor correction (PFC) applications. It handles the high inrush currents and transient loads that standard contactors aren't rated for, making it the right call for any panel where you're switching PFC stages on a 50 Hz network. Rated for AC coil voltage of 24 V at 50 Hz, this contactor switches capacitor loads up to 6 A at 230 V and 3 A at 400 V, with a maximum operating frequency of 150 switching operations per hour at 230 V to 240 V. At 690 V the resistive switching capacity drops to 0 A — this is a capacitor-duty device, not a general-purpose power contactor, so don't spec it for motor loads. The contactor operates across a 0.8 to 1.1 times rated voltage range at 50 Hz, so it holds in during sags but drops out cleanly on a brownout.
Mounting and Environmental Fit for the Panel
The 80 mm width and 140 mm height fit a standard S3 contactor footprint; depth is 152 mm including the arc chamber. The S3 frame size accepts up to 70 mm² power cable on the main poles (1x 70 mm² at 40 °C, 2x 50 mm² at 60 °C), so it handles the larger conductors typical of capacitor bank wiring.
Switching Performance and Duty Cycle
Arcing time is 10 to 20 ms, with an AC switching time of 10 to 21 ms. That's fast enough to minimize contact wear during capacitor inrush, but the real limit is the maximum operating frequency: 150 cycles per hour at 230 V to 240 V, dropping to 80 at 400 V, 53 at 480 V to 500 V, 32 at 600 V, and 30 at 690 V. If your PFC controller is switching stages more frequently than that, you'll overshoot the contactor's thermal limit — step up to a larger frame or reduce the switching rate.
