S00 contactor for motor switching up to 690 V AC-3
The Siemens 3RT7017-1AB02 is a SIRIUS size S00 contactor — the smallest frame in the SIRIUS family — with three main NO poles and a 24 V AC 50/60 Hz coil. Its AC-3 rated operational current of 6 A at 400 V covers fractional-horsepower motors up to roughly 2.2 kW at 400 V three-phase; the same contactor also carries 3 A at 400 V AC-4 for reversing or inching duty where the load is switched under full stall current. The 690 V AC-3 rating drops to 1 A, so it handles 690 V motor circuits only at light loads. The 24 V AC coil draws 0.27 A at both 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with a holding power of just 0.27 W DC — negligible thermal load inside a crowded panel. The coil closing power is 0.8 W DC.
Panel fit and mounting
This contactor snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail per DIN EN 50022 (screw and snap-on method). Its 45 mm width and 57.5 mm height leave a compact footprint; the 72 mm depth means it clears most 80 mm deep enclosures. Side-by-side mounting is permitted without derating — useful for multi-contactor motor starter groups. The mounting position is flexible: ±180° rotation on a vertical surface, and can be tilted forward or backward by ±22.5°. Screw terminals on both main and auxiliary circuits accept 2 x (0.5 to 2.5 mm²) solid or stranded, or 2 x (0.5 to 1.5 mm²) finely stranded with ferrule. The degree of pollution is 3, so it's rated for industrial environments with conductive dust or condensation — no additional conformal coating required for normal panel conditions.
Protection coordination and auxiliary contacts
For type of coordination 2 (no welding after short circuit), the required backup fuse is a gL/gG NH 3NA: 20 A. For type of coordination 1 (welding allowed), the same fuse type is 35 A. The contactor is rated for surge voltage withstand of 6 kV, which aligns with installation category III in a 400 V distribution panel. Auxiliary contact blocks can be added (product extension auxiliary switch is supported). The built-in auxiliary contacts are rated for PLC-level switching: acceptable for 17 V, 5 mA, so they can directly drive a 24 V DC PLC input without an interposing relay. The maximum switching frequency is 750 operations per hour at AC-3 and 250 at AC-4.
Environmental and shock ratings
Operating temperature range is -10 to +55 °C; storage from -25 to +70 °C. The contactor withstands 9.8 g for 5 ms and 5.9 g for 10 ms sine-pulse shock — sufficient for most industrial panel applications, including those mounted on machinery subject to vibration.
