Motor protection circuit breaker for DIN-rail panels
The Siemens SIRIUS 3RV2011-1JA20-ZW96 is a motor protection circuit breaker designed for screw and snap-on mounting onto 35 mm standard mounting rail per DIN EN 60715, making it a direct fit for any standard DIN-rail panel enclosure. Rated for CLASS 10 trip, it provides fast overload protection for motor starting applications where the rotor is locked or the load is high-inertia — the trip class governs how long the breaker holds during a start before opening, and CLASS 10 clears within 10 seconds at 7.2× the thermal setting, which is the standard for standard-duty induction motors. Phase failure detection is built in, so a lost phase on the line side will trip the breaker rather than letting the motor single-phase and overheat.
Interrupting capacity and voltage coverage
The interrupting capacity at 400 V rated value is 100 kA, which means this breaker can safely clear a bolted fault up to that level without rupturing — sufficient for most industrial service-entrance and sub-distribution panels where the available fault current is high. At 240 V rated value it also delivers 100 kA, while at 500 V rated value it drops to 42 kA and at 690 V rated value to 4 kA — the voltage derating is typical for this class and the 4 kA at 690 V still covers most motor branch circuits at that voltage level. The rated voltage range spans 20 to 690 V, covering low-voltage motor circuits from small control transformers up to 690 V industrial mains.
Sizing for motor loads
At 575/600 V rated value the breaker supports up to 10 hp, and at 460/480 V rated value up to 5 hp — these horsepower ratings give a direct motor-sizing reference for North American 60 Hz installations. For 50 Hz European voltage levels, at 400 V rated value the gL/gG fuse backup is 50 A, and at 500 V rated value it is 40 A — these are the maximum upstream fuse ratings the breaker coordinates with for short-circuit protection. The maximum switching frequency at AC-3 duty is 15 operations per hour, which is adequate for a motor starter cycling a conveyor or pump but not for a high-speed indexing application.
Mounting and clearance
Mounting position is any, so the breaker can be installed horizontally or vertically in the panel without derating. Required clearances: 50 mm upwards and downwards, 30 mm at the side, and 0 mm forwards and backwards — the zero forwards/backwards clearance means it can be mounted flush against a panel backplate or enclosure wall, which saves space in tight cabinets. The main current circuit uses spring-loaded terminals that accept 2× (0.5 to 4 mm²) solid or stranded wire — no screw torque to verify, just strip and insert.
Environmental range
Operating temperature range is -20 to +60 °C, with temperature compensation active across that same span so the thermal trip curve stays accurate regardless of ambient heat inside the panel. Storage and transport range extends from -50 to +80 °C, which covers cold warehouse storage and shipping through hot climates.
