80 A at 40 °C — the rating that governs the panel
The 3RW4046-1TB04: That 40 °C base is the typical unventilated enclosure ceiling — if your panel runs hotter, the usable current drops by roughly 9 % per 10 °C rise. It carries a 600 V insulation voltage rating (pollution degree 3 per IEC 60947-4-2), which covers 480 V and 575 V line supplies common in North American and European industrial plants.
Mounting and clearance — S3 frame realities
The S3 frame measures 170 mm high, 70 mm wide, and 190 mm deep. It mounts via screw and snap-on to DIN rail — the snap-on lets you pre-wire the panel and clip the unit in last. Clearance matters: 60 mm above, 40 mm below, and 30 mm at the side for airflow. Without an additional fan, the mounting surface must stay within ±10° of vertical and ±10° tilt. With the optional fan, the envelope opens to ±90° rotation and ±22.5° tilt front/back.
Terminal capacity and wiring
Main circuit terminals accept screw-type connections: 2x (10 … 70 mm²) stranded or 2x (10 … 50 mm²) finely stranded, plus 2x (7 … 1/0) AWG for the main contacts. Maximum motor cable length is 300 m — long enough for most pump and conveyor runs, but if you're feeding a motor 400 m away, plan on an output reactor or derating the cable capacitance.
Protection and control features
Built-in motor overload protection and intrinsic device protection are standard. The adjustable current limitation (20 % minimum load) lets you tune the starting torque to the load — useful for soft-starting high-inertia fans or conveyors without tripping upstream breakers. The unit uses thyristor-based soft-start technology — no inside-delta circuit option on this variant.
The derating temperature threshold is 40 °C — above that, the continuous current rating steps down as shown in the spec table.
