What the 954 A rating actually means for your motor line
The Siemens 3RW4453-6BC34 is a SIRIUS soft starter rated 954 A at 40 °C — that's the continuous motor current it can handle in standard in-line wiring. The 690 V insulation voltage gives headroom on 400/480 V systems without derating the isolation gap. An integrated bypass contact system means the thyristors are shorted out after the motor reaches full speed — the 954 A rating applies to the bypass path, not just the silicon. That keeps the heatsink cool in continuous run and extends the life of the semiconductors. Inside-delta wiring is supported, which drops the current through each thyristor leg to about 58% of the line current — effectively letting this unit start motors up to roughly 1650 A line current in a delta-configured winding. Check the motor terminal box arrangement before specifying that topology.
Panel fit and wiring — the physical constraints
This is a screw-fixed unit, not a DIN-rail snap-on. The footprint is 640 mm high × 510 mm wide × 290 mm deep — measure the backplate and door clearance before ordering. Required airflow gaps: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, and only 5 mm at the sides for tight side-by-side mounting. Main current circuit connects via busbars. The stranded cable range is 70 to 240 mm², with finely stranded (flexible) cable from 50 to 240 mm², and AWG equivalents from 2/0 to 500 kcmil. That's heavy lug work — budget for a hydraulic crimper and busbar drilling. Auxiliary and control circuits use screw-type terminals accepting 2 × (0.5 to 2.5 mm²) solid or 2 × (AWG 20 to 14) for aux contacts. Maximum motor cable length is 500 m — fine for most plant layouts, but if you're feeding a remote pump house, check the cable capacitance against the thyristor dV/dt rating.

Protection and control features — what's built in
Motor overload protection and intrinsic device protection are integrated — no separate overload relay needed, and the thyristor junction temperature is monitored directly. Adjustable current limitation lets you set the start current between 8% and 100% of the rated motor current, and the minimum load threshold is 8% — below that the unit won't regulate, but that's rarely an issue for induction motors. An external reset input allows remote fault clearing from a PLC or pushbutton station. The display version shows fault codes on the unit itself — no need to plug in a laptop for basic diagnostics. A motor brake output is included, which controls a DC injection brake for vertical or high-inertia loads — wire it to the brake coil directly. Control supply is 115 V AC at both 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with operating frequency rated 50 to 60 Hz. Storage temperature range is -25 to +80 °C; operating ambient max is 60 °C with derating applied above 40 °C.
