Current rating and thermal derating — the panel builder's constraint
The 3RW4453-6BC46: That 20 % drop between 40 °C and 60 °C means the panel ventilation and adjacent heat sources directly govern the usable current — not the nameplate number. Mounting position is vertical surface with ±90° rotation and ±22.5° tilt front/back. Clearance requirements: 100 mm upward, 75 mm downward, 5 mm at the sides. These aren't suggestions — the 640 mm height and 510 mm width already fill a swing-panel; skimping on the 100 mm top gap traps heat and accelerates the derating curve.
Integrated bypass and inside-delta — what they save in the cabinet
The integrated bypass contact system eliminates the external bypass contactor and its wiring — one less component to size, mount, and document. Inside-delta wiring reduces the line current to 58 % of the motor FLA, so the 954 A rating covers motors up to roughly 1650 A FLA in delta configuration. That's the difference between a 1600 A frame and a 2500 A frame on the line side. Adjustable current limitation and motor overload protection are built in — no separate overload relay. The minimum load setting of 8 % means it handles lightly loaded conveyors or pumps without nuisance tripping on the low-end.
Connection terminals and wire sizing
Main circuit connection accepts busbar or cable: stranded 70–240 mm², finely stranded 50–240 mm², or AWG 2/0–500 kcmil. Maximum motor cable length is 500 m — beyond that, capacitive charging current can cause nuisance trips on the thyristor gate drive.
Environmental and compliance
Pollution degree 3 per IEC 60947-4-2 — rated for conductive dust and industrial atmospheres. Storage temperature range -25 to +80 °C, operation up to 60 °C ambient. Rated insulation voltage 690 V covers 400 V, 480 V, and 575 V systems with margin to the 690 V ceiling. The product designation is soft starter with thyristor output and display for fault signals. Intrinsic device protection and motor brake output are included — the brake output handles DC injection braking without an external contactor.
