1680 A at 40 °C — the rating that decides panel fit
The 3RW4458-2BC36: That 40 °C figure is the baseline for sizing the panel ventilation and the upstream feeder — if the enclosure ambient runs hotter, the available motor current drops by roughly 12 % per 10 °C rise.
Mounting and wiring — what the enclosure needs
Mounting is screw fixing with a vertical surface orientation; the unit can be rotated ±90° or tilted ±22.5° front/back. Dimensions are 510 mm wide × 640 mm high × 290 mm deep — that's a large-frame soft starter, so the enclosure depth needs to clear the 290 mm plus cable bending radius. Main circuit connection is via busbar (stranded 70–240 mm² or 2/0–500 kcmil). The main lugs are sized for high-current cable — plan for compression lugs and a torque wrench. Clearance requirements: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 5 mm at the sides. The 500 m maximum wire length to the motor matters for long cable runs — voltage drop and reflected wave effects need checking at that distance.
Protection and control features
Built-in motor overload protection and intrinsic device protection are standard. Adjustable current limitation lets you set the start current between 8 % and 100 % of the rated current — useful for soft-starting conveyors or pumps without tripping upstream breakers. Supports inside-delta connection for six-wire motors, which reduces the line current draw during start. An external reset input and a display for fault signals are included — the display shows the trip code so you don't need a separate HMI to diagnose a jam. Pollution degree 3 per IEC 60947-4-2 means it's rated for industrial environments with conductive dust or occasional condensation — no derating needed for typical factory-floor conditions.
