Continuous current and voltage — sizing the soft starter to the motor
The 3RW4465-6BC46: The integrated bypass contact system switches the thyristors out after the start ramp, so the continuous current rating applies to the bypass path, not the semiconductors — this keeps heat dissipation low during run.
Protection and control features — reducing external component count
Built-in motor overload protection and intrinsic device protection mean you can omit a separate overload relay in many installations — the soft starter handles both the motor thermal model and its own semiconductor junction temperature. Adjustable current limitation lets you set the starting current limit as a percentage of the motor FLA, which helps coordinate with upstream protection. The onboard display for fault signals gives immediate diagnostic feedback without a separate HMI, and an external reset input allows remote fault reset from a PLC or pushbutton. A motor brake output is integrated, so the unit can control a DC injection brake or mechanical brake coil directly from the soft starter — no extra contactor needed for that function.
Wiring and termination — high-current busbar and auxiliary screw terminals
The main current circuit uses busbar connection — this is the standard termination for a 1864 A device, not lug or cable lugs. The stranded cable range for the main circuit is 70…240 mm², and finely stranded 50…240 mm². For AWG, the main contacts accept 2/0…500 kcmil. The maximum motor cable length is 500 m — beyond that, reflected wave effects on the motor terminals need evaluation.
Mounting and environmental limits — panel layout constraints
Clearances: 100 mm upwards, 75 mm downwards, 5 mm at the sides. Degree of pollution 3 per IEC 60947-4-2 means it is rated for industrial environments where conductive pollution (dust, moisture) can occur — no additional conformal coating is required for typical factory-floor air. Storage temperature range is -25…+80 °C; operation is allowed up to 60 °C ambient.
Inside-delta wiring and minimum load capability
The soft starter supports inside-delta circuit connection — wiring the unit inside the motor delta reduces the line current to 58% of the motor full-load current, allowing a smaller-rated soft starter for the same motor. Minimum load is 8%, so very light loads (pumps running dry, unloaded conveyors) still start reliably.
