What this soft starter handles — and where it fits
The Siemens 3RW5072-2AB04 is a hybrid switching device rated for a minimum operating current of 90 A across a voltage range of 200 to 480 V. The trip class is selectable between CLASS 10A, 10E (preset), and 20E per IEC 60947-4-2, which means you can match the thermal overload protection to the motor start profile — CLASS 10 for standard starts, CLASS 20 for higher-inertia loads like centrifuges or crushers. It carries ATEX, UKEX, and IECEx certification, so it can be integrated into motor starter assemblies in hazardous-area zones where explosive atmospheres may be present. The approvals cover the soft starter itself as part of a certified installation — the enclosure and cabling still need to match the zone classification. Fieldbus options include PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET, with PROFIenergy available when used with the PROFINET communication module. This makes it straightforward to drop into an existing automation network without a separate gateway.
Mounting and environmental limits
The unit measures 160 mm wide by 230 mm high by 282 mm deep and uses screw fixing to a vertical mounting surface. The mounting position allows ±90° rotation and ±22.5° tilt forward/back, so it can be oriented to fit tight panel layouts without derating. Shock resistance is 15 g for 11 ms, dropping to 12 g if contact lifting is a concern — relevant for installations on vibrating machinery or near conveyors. Clearance requirements: 100 mm upwards, 75 mm downwards, 10 mm forwards, 0 mm backwards, and 5 mm at the sides. These are the minimum air gaps for heat dissipation and arc flash containment — don't crowd the enclosure.
Control and protection features
The soft starter includes voltage ramp and soft torque start profiles, plus a pump ramp-down function for reducing water hammer on pump stops. Auto-reset and remote reset (by cycling the control supply voltage) are supported, which is useful for unattended installations. An analog output is configurable as 4-20 mA (default) or 0-10 V when used with the High Feature HMI. The minimum load is 15% of the smallest settable Ie, so it can handle lightly loaded motors without nuisance tripping. An error logbook is available only with special accessories — factor that into the BOM if fault logging is required for compliance or diagnostics.
The 3RW5072-2AB04 carries UL, CSA, and CE markings, covering North American and European regulatory acceptance.
