Hybrid switching with ATEX and fieldbus
The Siemens 3RW5074-6AB15 is a hybrid switching device in the soft starter category, rated for a minimum load current of 135 A and a rated voltage of 200 to 600 V. It carries ATEX, UKEX, and IECEx certifications alongside CE, UL, and CSA — meaning it can be specified into Zone 2 gas or dust areas in a hot-strip mill without a separate isolation barrier. The Trip Class is configurable between CLASS 10A, 10E (preset), and 20E per IEC 60947-4-2 — this determines how long the starter can sustain the motor start current before tripping. CLASS 10A is tight for high-inertia loads; 20E gives the thermal budget for a long ramp on a centrifuge or crusher.
Fieldbus and analog output for tension control
The 3RW5074-6AB15 integrates with PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP — so it can slot into a mill control network without a protocol gateway. The analog output defaults to 4-20 mA and can be parameterized to 0-10 V via the High Feature HMI, which is useful for feeding a torque or current signal to a downstream tension controller. Soft Torque, Voltage Ramp, and Pump Ramp Down are built in — the pump ramp down reduces water hammer on a discharge line by extending the deceleration ramp, which matters when the starter is feeding a 135 A motor on a mill coolant pump.
Mounting clearances and ambient derating
The unit is screw-fixed, 160 mm wide, 230 mm high, 282 mm deep. Required clearances: 100 mm upward, 75 mm downward, 10 mm forward, 5 mm at the side, 0 mm backward. In a panel near a furnace, the ambient derating kicks in at 40 °C — above that the 135 A minimum must be recalculated per the derating curve. Shock resistance is 15 g for 11 ms, with potential contact lifting from 12 g / 11 ms — this is relevant for mounting on a mill foundation where vibration from the rolling stands couples into the panel.
Lifecycle and procurement
The ATEX, UKEX, and IECEx certifications are listed on the nameplate — the documentation package (RoHS, REACH, UL, IEC) should be requested at quote to satisfy the quality-doc-control gate.
