What this soft starter does that a VFD cannot
The 3RW5075-2AB05 is a hybrid switching device — it uses thyristors only during the start and stop ramp, then bypasses to an internal contactor for full-speed running. That means no continuous semiconductor losses, so it runs cooler than a VFD at steady state and handles the 160 A minimum rated current without derating for harmonics. Trip class is preset to CLASS 10A / 10E, with an optional CLASS 20E setting per IEC 60947-4-2. For a motor with a 10-second start time, CLASS 10A protects the winding without nuisance tripping; CLASS 20E gives you room for high-inertia loads like centrifuges.
Fieldbus and analog feedback — integration without a gateway
The soft starter ships with onboard PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET. No separate communication module needed for most plants — you wire the network cable directly and map the starter into the controller's I/O tree. An analog output provides 4–20 mA (default) or 0–10 V (parameterizable via the High Feature HMI). That gives the PLC real-time motor current feedback without a separate CT — useful for load monitoring or pump protection.
Mounting and clearance — what fits in the panel
Dimensions are 282 mm deep, 160 mm wide, 230 mm high. That gives you options in a tight enclosure — just keep the minimum clearances: 100 mm upwards, 75 mm downwards, 10 mm forwards, 5 mm sideways, 0 mm backwards.
Thermal envelope and derating
If the panel ambient hits 50 °C, expect the continuous current rating to drop — check the derating curve in the manual before committing the BOM.
