The Siemens 3RW5213-1AC05 is a SIRIUS soft starter for three-phase induction motors, designed to reduce inrush current and mechanical stress during start-up. It is rated for line voltages of 200 to 600 V AC and has a minimum settable motor current of 5.5 A, making it a fit for smaller motor loads in a plant. The unit supports multiple fieldbus protocols out of the box — PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET — so it drops into most automation architectures without an extra gateway. Trip class is selectable: default CLASS 10A, or CLASS 10E and CLASS 20E per IEC 60947-4-2. That means it can be set for standard motor protection curves or stretched for higher-inertia loads where a longer start time is acceptable.
Sourcing and lifecycle — current production, no obsolescence worry
It carries UL, CSA, and CE approvals, which covers most North American and European panel builds without a separate certification review.
Mounting and integration — what fits in the panel
Dimensions are 170 mm wide, 275 mm high, and 152 mm deep, with screw fixing to the mounting surface. Clearance requirements: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 10 mm in front, 5 mm at the sides, and 0 mm behind — plan the enclosure depth and gland plate accordingly. Terminals accept solid or stranded conductors: two terminals for 1.0 to 2.5 mm² and two for 2.5 to 10 mm², covering typical motor and control wiring sizes. Mounting position allows ±10° rotation and forward/backward tilt on a vertical surface, which helps when fitting into a crowded panel.
Operating conditions and derating
Ambient temperature during operation is -25 to +60 °C, but derating applies at 40 °C and above — factor that into the thermal design of the enclosure. Shock resistance is 15 g / 11 ms, dropping to 12 g / 11 ms if potential contact lifting is a concern — relevant for mobile or high-vibration installations.
Control and feedback features
The analog output can be configured as 4-20 mA (default) or 0-10 V (parameterizable with the High Feature HMI), giving a process-variable signal back to the PLC or drive controller. Auto-reset and remote reset (by cycling the control supply voltage) are built in, reducing the need for a manual reset button on the panel door. Special functions include soft torque for gentle starts on conveyors or pumps, and pump ramp down for controlled deceleration — both useful in fluid-handling applications. Firmware updates are supported, and an error logbook is available with special accessories.
