Trip class and motor protection — the spec that governs the start
The 3RW5213-1AC15 is configured with Trip Class 10A as default, with selectable 10E and 20E per IEC 60947-4-2. Minimum load setting is 15% relative to the smallest settable Ie, so the unit can handle lightly loaded motors down to 5.5 A without dropping out. This matters when the motor is oversized for the driven load or when the soft starter is applied across a wide motor frame range in a standardised panel build.
Fieldbus integration and control interfaces
The unit ships with native support for PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET — five fieldbus protocols on one hardware revision. This eliminates the need for separate communication modules for most plant-floor networks. PROFIenergy is supported in conjunction with the PROFINET standard communication module, allowing the soft starter to participate in energy management profiles during idle periods. An analog output is provided, configurable as 4-20 mA (default) or 0-10 V via the High Feature HMI parameter set. This output can be mapped to motor current, voltage, or power factor for remote monitoring without a dedicated fieldbus gateway.
Mounting dimensions and panel integration
Mounting is by screw fixing, not DIN rail, so the panel backplate must be drilled for the fixing centres. Clearance requirements: 100 mm upwards, 75 mm downwards, 10 mm forwards, 5 mm at the sides, and 0 mm backwards — the rear face can sit flush against the panel backplate. The mounting position allows +/- 10° rotation and can be tilted forward or backward on a vertical mounting surface. This gives flexibility in existing enclosures where the backplate is not perfectly plumb, but the tolerance is tight — a 10° tilt is about 48 mm at the top edge of the 275 mm height.
Environmental ratings and derating
For audit purposes, the datasheet specifies that the continuous output current must be reduced when ambient exceeds 40 °C — the exact derating curve should be referenced from the product manual for the specific mounting configuration. Shock resistance is 15 g / 11 ms, with potential contact lifting noted at 12 g / 11 ms.
The 3RW5213-1AC15 carries CE marking, UL approval, and CSA approval — covering the three major industrial certification regimes for North American and European installations. The product category is listed as hybrid switching devices, which reflects the semiconductor-and-contactor hybrid topology used in the 3RW5 series.
