Soft starter for motor starting duty
The 3RW5214-1AC04: It is designed for controlled acceleration and deceleration of three-phase induction motors, reducing inrush current and mechanical stress on the driven load. Trip class is configurable to CLASS 10A (default), 10E, or 20E per IEC 60947-4-2, which means the starter can handle motor start profiles from normal to heavy-duty (e.g., high-inertia loads like centrifuges or crushers) without nuisance tripping during the acceleration ramp. Built-in fieldbus support includes PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET, so the starter integrates directly into a PLC-based control architecture without an external gateway. The analog output (4-20 mA default or 0-10 V parameterizable) provides current or load feedback to the controller for process monitoring. Soft Torque and Pump Ramp Down features are built in — the former reduces torque peaks during start for belted or geared loads, the latter prevents water hammer on pump deceleration by extending the stop ramp.
Mounting, wiring, and ambient limits
Dimensions are 275 mm height, 170 mm width, 152 mm depth. Fastening method is screw fixing — no DIN-rail clip; the unit bolts directly to the backplate. Clearance requirements: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 10 mm forward, 5 mm at the sides, 0 mm backward. This covers both control wiring (smaller gauge) and power wiring (larger gauge) in a single clamp. Ambient temperature during operation is -25 to +60 °C, but derating applies above 40 °C. For a panel with internal heat rise, factor the motor current derating curve from the datasheet — the unit's thermal capacity drops above 40 °C ambient. Mounting position allows +/-10° rotation and can be tilted forward or backward on a vertical surface. Shock resistance is 15 g / 11 ms, dropping to 12 g / 11 ms with potential contact lifting — suitable for standard industrial panel vibration but not high-shock environments like stamping presses without additional isolation.
Approvals include CE marking, UL approval, and CSA approval — the unit carries the marks for North American and European panel acceptance without additional agency review. Firmware updates are supported, and an error logbook is available with special accessories. The unit supports auto-reset and remote reset (by cycling the 24 V control supply), which is useful for unattended restart after a fault clears.
