What the trip class means for your motor start
The 3RW5215-1AC05: That's the right call for standard induction motors driving pumps, fans, and compressors — anything that isn't a high-inertia load. If you're starting a centrifuge or a loaded conveyor, you can switch it to CLASS 10E or CLASS 20E to give the motor more time to accelerate. That's a parameter change, not a hardware swap.
Fieldbus options — pick your network
This soft starter supports PROFIBUS, PROFINET standard, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP out of the box. That covers the vast majority of plant-floor networks — no separate gateway needed unless you're on DeviceNet or CANopen. PROFIenergy is available when paired with the PROFINET Standard communication module, letting you coordinate energy-saving pauses across a production line during idle periods.
Mounting and clearances for the panel
It mounts with screw fixing, not DIN rail — so budget for four holes in the backplate. The body is 275 mm tall, 170 mm wide, and 152 mm deep, which is a standard footprint for this SIRIUS frame size. Clearance requirements: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 10 mm in front, 5 mm at the sides, and zero behind. That's tight side-to-side but generous top-to-bottom for cable entry and airflow. The power terminals accept 1.0 to 2.5 mm² on the smaller set and 2.5 to 10 mm² on the larger — fine for the 11.5 A minimum rating. Control wiring is 24 V DC.
Environmental limits and derating
Ambient operating temperature is -25 to +60 °C, but Siemens flags derating above 40 °C. If your panel hits 50 °C, you'll need to reduce the continuous current or add forced ventilation — the spec says 'please observe derating' without giving the curve, so check the manual for the exact factor. Shock resistance is 15 g for 11 ms, dropping to 12 g if you risk contact lifting. That's fine for most industrial floors but marginal near a stamping press or drop forge — mount on vibration isolators if that's your environment.
