Trip Class 10A and the 15.5 A minimum — what they mean for motor starting

The 3RW5217-1AC14: This soft starter is set by default to Trip Class 10A per IEC 60947-4-2, meaning it will disconnect the motor if the start current persists beyond the 10-second thermal limit of the class. That's the standard for most pump and fan starts where the load accelerates quickly. You can also select Class 10E or 20E if the application needs a longer start ramp. The minimum settable operating current is 15.5 A, and the minimum load is 15 % relative to that value. That means the unit can handle motors drawing as little as ~2.3 A during the start phase, which covers small conveyors and light-duty pumps without needing a downsized starter.

Fieldbus options — PROFIBUS, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET

The 3RW5217-1AC14 ships with onboard PROFIBUS and Modbus RTU, plus support for Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET. That covers the major industrial Ethernet and serial fieldbus standards without an add-on module. If you need PROFIenergy, it works with the PROFINET standard communication module. The analog output defaults to 4-20 mA but can be parameterized to 0-10 V if you use the High Feature HMI. That gives you a speed or current signal back to the PLC without a separate transducer.
