Trip Class 10A default — overload protection that matches the motor's thermal curve
The 3RW5217-1AC15 ships with Trip Class 10A as the default setting, meaning it trips within 10 seconds at 7.2x the motor FLA — this keeps the junction temperature of a standard squirrel-cage rotor below the damage threshold during a stalled-rotor start. Class 10E and 20E are also selectable if the load inertia demands a longer acceleration ramp. Minimum settable current is 15.5 A, so this unit covers small-to-medium motors in the 5–15 hp range at 480 V. The rated voltage band of 200–600 V means it works on 208 V, 240 V, 400 V, 480 V, and 575 V systems without a separate voltage tap.
Fieldbus flexibility — five protocols, one wiring slot
The soft starter supports PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET via its communication module slot. If your plant runs a mix of legacy Modbus RTU and newer PROFINET lines, this one part number covers both without a hardware swap — just change the plugged module. PROFIenergy is supported when paired with the PROFINET communication module, allowing the drive to shed its own power draw during production pauses — useful for energy monitoring on automated lines.
Soft Torque and Pump Ramp Down — mechanical stress reduction
Soft Torque mode reduces the initial current spike on belted conveyors or gear-coupled loads, which cuts the mechanical shock at start. Pump Ramp Down provides a controlled deceleration on pump discharge — this prevents the pressure surge (water hammer) that slams check valves and bursts pipes on a coast-to-stop. The analog output defaults to 4–20 mA but can be parameterized to 0–10 V via the High Feature HMI. That signal can feed a local panel meter or a PLC analog input for real-time current or torque feedback during commissioning.
Mounting and clearances — screw-fixed, with forced-air spacing
Fastening is screw fixing to a vertical surface. The unit measures 275 mm high, 170 mm wide, 152 mm deep. Clearance requirements: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 10 mm in front, 5 mm at the sides, and 0 mm behind — so it can sit flush against the back panel as long as the top and bottom vents are unobstructed. In a non-ventilated enclosure, budget for a 10–15 % current derating if the internal ambient hits 50 °C.
Lifecycle and compliance — active production, full cert set
The unit is a hybrid switching device per Siemens' product category, combining a thyristor start ramp with an internal bypass contactor for zero steady-state power dissipation once the motor is at full speed.
