Trip class and motor protection coordination
The 3RW5217-3AC04 is configured with trip class 10A as default, with selectable 10E or 20E per IEC 60947-4-2. The minimum settable current is 15.5 A, which corresponds to 15 % of the smallest adjustable Ie. For a motor drawing 20 A full-load, this allows the soft starter to be tuned down to protect lightly loaded or intermittent-duty machines without nuisance tripping.
Fieldbus and communication — which protocols are supported
This soft starter natively supports PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET standard, plus PROFIenergy in conjunction with the PROFINET communication module. For a controls integrator, this means the 3RW5217-3AC04 can be dropped into a Siemens S7-1500 environment over PROFINET, or into a Rockwell plant-floor network over EtherNet/IP, without a protocol gateway. The analog output is configurable as 4-20 mA (default) or 0-10 V when parameterized via the High Feature HMI. This provides a direct motor current signal to a PLC analog input for trending or remote indication — useful for condition monitoring without adding a separate current transducer.
Mounting dimensions and panel integration
The unit measures 275 mm height, 170 mm width, and 152 mm depth. It is screw-fixed to the mounting surface. Clearance requirements: 100 mm upwards, 10 mm forwards, 0 mm backwards, 75 mm downwards, and 5 mm at the sides. The backwards clearance of zero means the unit can be mounted flush against a back panel — useful in shallow enclosures. Solid wire termination accepts 2× (1.0-2.5 mm²) and 2× (2.5-10 mm²) conductors. For a panel wireman, this covers both control wiring (1.0-2.5 mm²) and power wiring (2.5-10 mm²) with a single terminal design — no need for separate ferrule sizes or ring lugs.
Lifecycle and compliance documentation
For a site electrical engineer sizing the panel cooling, this means the soft starter can be installed in an unconditioned enclosure up to 40 °C without derating; above that, the current capacity must be reduced per the derating curve in the product documentation.
