Soft starter for motor starting — what the ratings mean
The 3RW5224-1TC15: The Trip Class is configurable as CLASS 10A (default), 10E, or 20E per IEC 60947-4-2 — this sets the maximum allowed starting time before the overload protection trips, so you match it to the motor's acceleration profile. A CLASS 10A trip gives you about 10 seconds of starting time at 7.2x Ie;. The unit supports multiple fieldbus protocols natively: PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET — so it drops into most automation architectures without a separate gateway.
Mounting and panel integration
The soft starter measures 203 mm deep, 185 mm wide, and 306 mm high, and uses screw fixing for panel mounting. Clearance requirements are specified: 100 mm upwards, 10 mm forwards, 0 mm backwards, 75 mm downwards, and 5 mm at the side — so plan the DIN rail and enclosure layout around these gaps, especially the 100 mm above for airflow and cable bend radius. The mounting position allows +/- 10° rotation and can be tilted forward or backward on a vertical surface. Shock resistance is rated at 15 g / 11 ms, with potential contact lifting above 12 g / 11 ms, which is fine for most industrial panels but worth checking if the enclosure is near a large press or crusher.
Application features and compliance
This soft starter includes Soft Torque and Pump Ramp Down features — the soft torque profile reduces mechanical stress on belts and gears during start, and the pump ramp down gradually reduces speed to prevent water hammer in pumping systems. A remote reset is available by cycling the control supply voltage, and the unit supports auto-reset for unattended operation. The minimum load is 15 % relative to the smallest settable Ie, so it can handle lightly loaded motors without nuisance tripping. Approvals include UL, CSA, and CE marking — the part is accepted for North American and European installations. The product category is hybrid switching devices, part of the SIRIUS brand family. Firmware updates are supported, and an error logbook is available only with special accessories. There is no analog output and no torque control; this is a standard soft starter, not a closed-loop torque controller.
