Soft starter for motor control — what the ratings mean
The 3RW5224-3AC05 is a SIRIUS-brand hybrid switching device — a soft starter, not a VFD — designed to ramp motors up and down, limiting inrush current and mechanical shock on conveyors, pumps, and fans. Rated voltage range is 200 to 600 V, covering common global line voltages from 208 V to 600 V without needing a separate transformer tap. Trip class is configurable as CLASS 10A (default), 10E, or 20E per IEC 60947-4-2 — this sets the maximum allowable overload time before the starter trips, so matching the motor's thermal withstand curve is straightforward. Minimum load is 15 % relative to the smallest settable Ie — if the motor is significantly oversized for the driven load, the starter may not detect a true overload condition.
Fieldbus and control connectivity — what's on board
Onboard fieldbus options include PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET standard — the starter integrates into most common industrial networks without an external gateway. PROFIenergy is supported in conjunction with the PROFINET standard communication module — this allows the drive to be put into an energy-saving state during production pauses. Analog output is configurable as 4-20 mA (default) or 0-10 V (parameterizable with High Feature HMI) — useful for feeding a current signal to a PLC or panel meter. Remote reset is achieved by cycling the control supply voltage (24 V DC) — no separate reset button needed in the panel.
Mounting, cooling, and panel fit
Fastening method is screw fixing — not DIN-rail snap-on — so the panel must have a mounting plate or threaded inserts at the correct hole pattern. Mounting position allows +/- 10° rotation and can be tilted forward or backward on a vertical mounting surface — useful when the enclosure layout is tight. Required clearances: 100 mm upwards, 10 mm forwards, 0 mm backwards, 75 mm downwards, 5 mm at the side — these are the minimum air gaps for heat dissipation and arc flash protection.
Compliance and approvals — UL, CSA, CE, pollution degree 3
UL, CSA, and CE marking are all confirmed — the starter is accepted in North American and European installations without additional agency review. Pollution degree 3 per IEC 60947-4-2 — suitable for industrial environments with conductive pollution (dust, moisture, chemical fumes) typical of factory floors. Shock resistance is 15 g / 11 ms, with potential contact lifting from 12 g / 11 ms — adequate for most rotating equipment but not extreme vibration environments.
