Active production — what that means for procurement
The 3RW5227-1AC14: Same part, different passport — this is the genuine Siemens SIRIUS unit regardless of which authorized region it ships from. The approvals (CE, UL, CSA) cover European and North American installations, so the compliance paperwork is consistent across markets.
Motor sizing and overload protection — the 40.5 A floor
The minimum operating current is 40.5 A — this sets the lower bound for motor sizing. If the connected motor's full-load current falls below that, the soft starter may not regulate properly; the minimum load is 15% of the smallest settable Ie, so a 7.5 kW motor at 400 V (roughly 15 A FLC) is below the floor. Trip class is selectable: CLASS 10A (default), 10E, or 20E per IEC 60947-4-2. The control supply is the same range regardless of line frequency — no separate transformer needed for 60 Hz sites.
Fieldbus integration — which network fits your rack
The 3RW5227-1AC14 supports PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET. PROFINET includes PROFIenergy for energy management during idle phases. Analog output is configurable: 4-20 mA (default) or 0-10 V (parameterizable with the High Feature HMI). This feeds motor current or load status back to a PLC analog input without a separate transducer. Firmware is field-updateable — the unit can be reflashed in situ if a new feature or bug fix ships after installation.
Mounting and clearance — panel fit constraints
Mounting is screw fixing with a vertical mounting surface. The unit can be rotated ±90° or tilted ±22.5° front-to-back, which helps in tight enclosures where the backplane is not perfectly vertical. Clearance distances: 100 mm upwards, 10 mm forwards, 0 mm backwards, 75 mm downwards, 5 mm at the sides. The zero backward clearance means the unit can sit flush against the back panel — useful when the enclosure depth is tight. Dimensions are 203 mm deep × 185 mm wide × 306 mm high.
Environmental limits and derating
In a non-ventilated enclosure at 50 °C ambient, expect the continuous current rating to drop — the derating curve is in the product documentation. Shock resistance is 15 g / 11 ms, with potential contact lifting above 12 g / 11 ms. For installations near vibrating machinery (compressors, large fans), ensure the mounting surface does not transmit sustained vibration above that threshold.
Application-specific starting profiles
Soft torque and pump ramp down are supported. Soft torque reduces the initial current spike on high-friction loads; pump ramp down extends the deceleration to prevent water hammer in pumping systems. Service factor is 1 — no built-in overload margin beyond the nameplate rating. The trip class handles overload protection, but continuous operation at or above rated current requires the derating to be respected.
Reset and diagnostics
Auto-reset and remote reset are available. Remote reset is achieved by turning off the control supply voltage — no separate reset signal line needed. This simplifies remote restart in unattended pumping stations or conveyor lines. Error logbook is available only with special accessories — not built into the base unit. If trip history tracking is required for root-cause analysis, budget for the accessory module.
