Trip class and motor protection — what the 10A/10E/20E rating means for your start profile
The 3RW5243-2TC05 is a SIRIUS soft starter rated for a minimum motor current of 90 A across a 200-600 V supply range. Its trip class is configurable between CLASS 10A (default), 10E, and 20E per IEC 60947-4-2 — this sets the thermal overload curve that protects the motor during start. A Class 10A trip clears in 10 seconds at 7.2× FLA, matching standard squirrel-cage motors with normal inertia; 10E extends that window for extended-start applications like centrifuges, and 20E covers high-inertia loads such as crushers or long conveyors.
Fieldbus connectivity — PROFIBUS, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET on one unit
This soft starter ships with onboard PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET standard communication — no separate gateway module needed for most line integrations. PROFINET supports PROFIenergy in conjunction with the standard communication module, allowing the drive to shed idle loads during production pauses. The Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP stacks share the same physical port, so the commissioning engineer selects the protocol via the parameter menu without a hardware swap.
Mounting and clearance — screw-fixed chassis with defined air gaps
Fastening method is screw fixing to the backplate; the unit measures 210 mm wide, 393 mm high, and 203 mm deep. Clearance requirements are specified: 100 mm upwards, 10 mm forwards, 0 mm backwards, 75 mm downwards, and 5 mm at the side. The mounting position allows a vertical surface with ±90° rotation and ±22.5° tilt forward/backward, giving the panel builder flexibility in enclosure layout while maintaining the airflow path for the heatsink.
Ambient derating and operating envelope
The unit carries a service factor of 1, meaning no built-in overload margin beyond nameplate — the trip class settings handle the thermal protection. Shock resistance is 15 g for 11 ms, with potential contact lifting noted at 12 g / 11 ms, which matters for installations on vibrating machinery or near crushers.
Approvals and compliance — UL, CSA, CE, pollution degree 3
Approved under UL, CSA, and CE marking schemes. The pollution degree is rated 3 per IEC 60947-4-2, meaning it tolerates conductive pollution or dry non-conductive pollution that becomes conductive due to condensation — typical for industrial control panels without climate control. The minimum load is 15% of the smallest settable Ie, so the soft starter can handle lightly loaded motors without nuisance tripping.
Application-specific features — pump ramp down and soft torque
Pump ramp down is included, which gradually reduces the voltage to the motor during stop to eliminate water hammer in pumping systems. Soft torque is also available, reducing mechanical stress on the load during start. Remote reset is possible by cycling the 24 V control supply voltage. An error logbook is available only with special accessories — the base unit does not store fault history without the optional memory module.
