Hazardous-area motor starting with ATEX certification
The Siemens 3RW5515-1HA14 is a soft starter with ATEX and IECEx certification, meaning it is approved for direct installation in potentially explosive atmospheres — a requirement for motor starting in chemical, oil & gas, or grain-handling environments. The ATEX marking and IECEx listing cover both gas and dust zones, so this unit can serve as the primary motor controller inside a classified area without an external purge or isolation barrier. The wide input range also simplifies stocking for multi-site maintenance programs.
Selectable trip class and starting profiles
Trip class is selectable from 10A, 10E (default), 20E, or 30E per IEC 60947-4-2. Class 10A provides the fastest overload protection — ideal for high-inertia loads where the motor must accelerate quickly without overheating the windings. Class 30E allows a longer start time for heavy loads like crushers or centrifuges. The default 10E setting matches most standard motor applications. Starting profiles include voltage ramp, breakaway pulse, and pump ramp down. The breakaway pulse delivers a short torque boost to break static friction on conveyors or mixers before the ramp begins. Pump ramp down gradually reduces speed to prevent water hammer in pumping systems — a feature often specified in water/wastewater installations.
Fieldbus connectivity and analog feedback
Onboard fieldbus support includes PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP. PROFIenergy is supported with PROFINET communication modules for energy management during idle periods. An analog output provides motor current or power feedback as 4-20 mA (default) or 0-10 V, configurable via parameters. This signal feeds directly into a PLC analog input or SCADA system for real-time load monitoring without a separate transducer.
Physical integration and clearance requirements
Dimensions are 275 mm high, 170 mm wide, and 152 mm deep. Mounting requires 100 mm upward clearance, 10 mm forward, 0 mm backward, 75 mm downward, and 5 mm at the sides. These clearances are tight enough to fit into a standard 600 mm deep enclosure with room for cable ducts. Screw terminals accept 2x (1.0-2.5 mm²) and 2x (2.5-10 mm²) solid conductors.
CE marking confirms conformity with EU directives for industrial equipment. UL approval and CSA approval cover North American installations — the soft starter carries both marks, so it can be specified for UL 508A panels without additional component evaluation. Accuracy class 5 per IEC 61557-12 applies to the built-in current measurement for energy monitoring.
