The Siemens 3RW5517-1HA14 is a SIRIUS-series soft starter for three-phase induction motors, rated for a main circuit voltage of 200-480 V. Its trip class is configurable — default CLASS 10A or 10E, with selectable 20E and 30E per IEC 60947-4-2 — meaning you can match the overload protection curve to the motor's starting characteristic and driven load. A pump ramp-down function and breakaway pulse are built in, so it handles both high-inertia starts and controlled stopping without mechanical shock.
Mounts on a DIN rail. The enclosure measures 275 mm high by 170 mm wide by 152 mm deep. Clearance requirements are specific: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 10 mm forward, 5 mm at the sides, and zero clearance needed at the back — useful when the panel backplane is already dense. Screw terminals accept 1.0-2.5 mm² solid on the control side and 2.5-10 mm² on the power side.
Communications and diagnostics
Supports PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP natively. PROFIenergy is available when paired with a PROFINET communication module. An analog output (4-20 mA or 0-10 V) provides motor current or torque feedback to the PLC. Onboard diagnostics include an event list, error logbook, trace function, and motor heating model — useful for root-cause analysis after a trip without needing an external data logger. Firmware updates are field-loadable.
Approvals and certifications
Carries ATEX and IECEx certification for explosive atmospheres, plus UL, CSA, and CE marking. This covers most global regulatory requirements for a motor starter in a hazardous-area installation. Accuracy class 5 per IEC 61557-12 applies to the integrated metering functions.
