Hazardous-area soft starting — ATEX and IECEx on the nameplate
The 3RW5517-3HA15 carries ATEX and IECEx certification per the evidence, so it can be installed in Zone 1 or Zone 2 motor control centres where explosive atmospheres are present. This is the first filter for any oil-and-gas or chemical-process panel build — if the starter lacks Ex marking, the loop check fails before the motor turns.
Voltage range and trip-class flexibility
Rated 200–600 V, the unit covers 208 V, 400 V, 480 V, and 600 V networks without a tap-change or module swap — one SKU for global low-voltage distribution. The trip class is configurable from CLASS 10A up to CLASS 30E per IEC 60947-4-2. The soft starter includes voltage ramp, pump ramp down, and a breakaway pulse — the pump ramp down feature gradually reduces torque at stop to eliminate water hammer in pipeline applications. The breakaway pulse gives a short high-torque burst to break static friction on stuck loads before ramping.
Fieldbus and control connectivity
PROFIBUS is onboard as standard; Modbus TCP is also supported. EtherNet/IP is not available on this variant, so Rockwell-centric plants need a gateway or a different order code. PROFIenergy is supported when paired with a PROFINET communication module, allowing the drive to shut down during idle periods for energy savings. The analog output can be configured as 4–20 mA or 0–10 V, feeding motor current or torque signals to a PLC or local display. Event list, error logbook, and trace function are built in for fault diagnosis — no external data logger needed.
Panel space and wiring
Dimensions are 275 mm high, 170 mm wide, 152 mm deep. Clearance requirements: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 10 mm in front, 5 mm at the sides, and 0 mm behind — the rear can sit flush against the back panel. The power terminals accept 2× (1.0–2.5 mm²) and 2× (2.5–10 mm²) conductors, covering most motor feeder sizes up to about 30–40 A depending on cable type.
Compliance and lifecycle
CE marked for European markets, UL and CSA approved for North America. The ATEX and IECEx markings are confirmed on the evidence — this is not a self-declared rating but a certified Ex device. Accuracy class 5 per IEC 61557-12 applies to the integrated metering function.
