Hazardous-area motor starting with ATEX/IECEx certification
The Siemens 3RW5543-6HA16 is a soft starter carrying both ATEX and IECEx certification, meaning it is approved for installation in explosive atmospheres where gas or dust hazards are present. This is the primary differentiator from standard soft starters — the ATEX mark and IECEx mark allow the device to be wired into Zone 1/21 or Zone 2/22 areas without additional enclosure protection, saving panel space and reducing installation cost. Rated for supply voltages from 200 V to 690 V, it covers the global low-voltage range — 208 V North American, 400 V European, and 690 V heavy-industrial networks — without needing a transformer tap change. The trip class is selectable between CLASS 10A, 10E, 20E, and 30E per IEC 60947-4-2, so the same unit handles both standard-start and high-inertia loads like centrifuges or crushers by adjusting the thermal model.
Fieldbus integration and motor control features
The 3RW5543-6HA16 supports PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP natively — no separate communication module needed. This means the soft starter drops directly into a Siemens S7-1500 or Rockwell ControlLogix network with a single cable, and the parameter set is accessible over the fieldbus for remote start/stop, current monitoring, and fault reset. Motor control features include DC braking for rapid stopping of high-inertia loads, a voltage ramp for smooth acceleration, torque control to limit starting torque, and a breakaway pulse to crack stuck pumps or conveyors before ramping. The analog output can be configured for 4-20 mA or 0-10 V to feed a PLC or SCADA with real-time motor current.
Approvals include UL, CSA, CE marking, ATEX, and IECEx — the unit ships with the documentation needed for panel certification in North America, Europe, and most global markets. The screw terminal connection simplifies wiring in the field without special tooling.
