Motor control with ATEX and fieldbus
The 3RW5554-6HA14 is a Siemens soft starter rated for 200-480 V, carrying ATEX and IECEx certification for explosive atmospheres, plus UL and CSA approvals for North American panels. Trip class defaults to CLASS 10A/10E per IEC 60947-4-2, with selectable CLASS 20E or 30E for heavier starts — the 10A/10E setting clears the start within 10 seconds at 6x rated current, protecting the motor winding from thermal stress during a stalled rotor. Built-in fieldbus support covers PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP — no separate communication module needed for most line integrations.
Sizing and mounting constraints
Dimensions are 478 mm wide, 764 mm high, 241 mm deep — a large-frame unit that needs a full-height swing door or a dedicated sub-panel bay. Clearance required: 100 mm above, 75 mm below, 10 mm in front, 5 mm at the sides, 0 mm behind.
Motor protection and diagnostics
Accuracy Class 5 per IEC 61557-12 means the current measurement error is within 5% of reading — adequate for overload protection but not for precision energy metering. Features include DC braking, voltage ramp, pump ramp down, torque control, breakaway pulse, motor heating for anti-condensation, and an analog output configurable as 4-20 mA or 0-10 V. Onboard event list, error logbook, and trace function simplify commissioning — the trace captures up to four parameters simultaneously for start-up waveform analysis.
