Rated current and thermal derating
The Siemens 3VA1040-3ED36-0JC0 is a 3-pole SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for a continuous current Iu of 40 A. The TM210 thermal-magnetic release holds the full 40 A from 40 °C up through 50 °C; above that the curve steps down to 38.4 A at 55 °C and reaches 36 A at 70 °C. For a panel builder, that means the breaker can be packed into a warm enclosure without derating until the internal ambient exceeds 50 °C — a practical headroom for most standard switchgear builds.
Breaking capacity across voltage levels
The interrupting rating varies sharply with line voltage: 75.6 kA at 240 V, 52.5 kA at 415 V, 32 kA at 440 V, and 7.5 kA at 690 V. The 415 V figure (52.5 kA) is the one most often checked for European industrial panels — it comfortably exceeds typical 25–36 kA fault levels on a 400 V distribution bus. At 690 V the rating drops to 7.5 kA, so confirm the available fault current if the breaker lands on a 690 V supply.
Dimensions and panel fit
At 130 mm high, 76.2 mm wide, and 70 mm deep, the 3VA1040-3ED36-0JC0 fits the standard 3-pole MCCB footprint for the SENTRON 3VA platform. The 76.2 mm width matches the typical 3-module DIN-rail or mounting-plate cutout.
Auxiliary and shunt trip configuration
This unit ships with two integrated auxiliary switches (HQ version) and a shunt trip release (STL). The shunt trip allows remote tripping via a control signal — useful for emergency-stop circuits or supervisory shutdown. The auxiliary switches provide status feedback (open/closed/tripped) back to a PLC or panel lamp. The shunt trip order code for replacement is 3VA9688-0BL32.
Environmental and mechanical limits
Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage range extends from -40 °C to 80 °C. The front face carries IP40 protection — suitable for clean indoor panel environments. Mechanical endurance is rated at 15,000 operations.
