What the ratings mean for your panel
The Siemens 3VA1080-2ED42-0HH0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated 80 A continuous at 40 °C, with a 4-pole configuration for three-phase plus neutral line protection. Its interrupting capacity reaches 52.5 kA at 240 V AC, tapering to 32 kA at 415 V and 7.5 kA at 690 V — so it handles high-fault utility feeds downstream of a transformer without cascading failure. The 800 V rated insulation voltage gives headroom for 480/277 V or 600 V delta systems. The 70 mm depth and 101.6 mm width fit standard SENTRON panel footprints; verify the 130 mm height against your enclosure gland plate clearance. Thermal derating is minimal through 50 °C (still 80 A), then drops to 78 A at 55 °C and 74 A at 70 °C (–). For a panel that runs warm near the top of the enclosure, the 55 °C figure is the one to size against — not the 40 °C nameplate. The 19.2 W maximum power loss is manageable but worth including in your enclosure thermal budget if the panel is densely packed.
Integrated accessories and wiring
Factory-fitted with a shunt trip release (STL) for remote tripping and two auxiliary switches plus one trip alarm switch (HQ) for status feedback to a PLC or annunciator panel. No undervoltage release or ground-fault monitoring is included. The auxiliary switch configuration means you get separate NO/NC contacts for breaker position and a dedicated alarm contact that changes state only on a fault trip — useful for differentiating a manual open from a protective trip in your SCADA logic.
Selectivity and coordination
As a line-protection design with no communication function, this MCCB is intended for standalone overcurrent and short-circuit protection in distribution panels. The 52.5 kA at 240 V and 32 kA at 415 V breaking capacities provide full-rated SCCR for most industrial panelboards. For selective coordination downstream of a larger feeder breaker, the 3VA1 series offers adjustable I²t curves — but this fixed-thermal-magnetic variant relies on its inherent time-current characteristic. Verify coordination with upstream devices per IEC 60947-2.
