What this part is — and isn't
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA1116-1AA42-0DH0 is a 4-pole switch disconnector on the IEC frame 160 platform, rated for 160 A continuous current. It is not a molded case circuit breaker — it provides no overload or short-circuit protection. Its job is safe isolation under load, not fault interruption. The 4-pole configuration switches three phases plus neutral, which matters for TN-S or TN-C-S systems where you need full isolation of the neutral conductor. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V, with maximum operational voltage 690 V AC 50/60 Hz and 600 V DC. That DC rating is useful for 480 VDC bus applications common in data-center or solar-string isolation. The front face carries IP40 protection — fine for a dry indoor panel; not rated for washdown.
Built-in auxiliary and release package
This variant ships with an integrated undervoltage release (UVR) rated 208-230 V AC, plus two HQ auxiliary switches and one HQ trip alarm switch — three CO contacts total. The UVR ensures the disconnector opens automatically if control voltage drops, a standard requirement for safety isolation in conveyor or machine-tool circuits. The auxiliary and alarm contacts feed status back to a PLC or panel indication without needing separate add-on modules. The main current circuit uses busbar connection on front terminals — designed for direct busbar stabs or bolted link bars, not lug or box terminals. That means the panel bus must be planned around this connection style; retrofitting into a lug-terminated panel requires an adapter kit. Optional motor drive is supported for remote switching.
Mechanical and environmental limits
Mechanical endurance is rated at 15 000 operating cycles — typical for a switch disconnector in this frame class, suitable for daily isolation duty but not for frequent switching as a load-break device. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to +70 °C; storage range extends from -40 °C to +80 °C. Maximum power loss at rated current is 38 W, which should be factored into enclosure thermal calculations.
