What this 3VA1 switch disconnector is and what it does
The Siemens 3VA1116-1AA42-0KC0 is a SENTRON 3VA1 IEC frame 160 switch disconnector rated for 160 A continuous current (Iu) across 4 poles. It is designed as a pure disconnect — no overload or short-circuit protection inside — so it serves as a manual load-break switch for isolating a circuit under load, not as a protective device. The 4-pole configuration handles three-phase plus neutral switching, common in distribution panels where full isolation is required. It ships with a factory-installed shunt trip (STL) rated for 220-250 V DC or 208-277 V AC, plus two HQ (high-quality) auxiliary contacts. The shunt trip allows remote tripping via a control signal — useful for emergency-stop circuits or supervisory shutdown sequences. The auxiliary contacts provide status feedback to a PLC or indication panel. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V, with maximum operational voltage 690 V AC and 600 V DC. The front face carries IP40 protection.
Mounting and integration into a panel
The 2 HQ auxiliary switches are wired separately; their contact arrangement is 2 CO (changeover) contacts. Maximum power loss is 38 W at rated current, so factor that into enclosure thermal calculations if the panel is densely packed.
