Rated current and breaking capacity — what they mean for your panel
The Siemens 3VA1116-3EF32-0AB0 is a 3-pole SENTRON molded case circuit breaker rated at 160 A continuously at 40 °C ambient, with no derating needed up to 50 °C — the full 160 A holds through that range. Above 50 °C the curve steps down: 158 A at 55 °C, 155 A at 60 °C, 153 A at 65 °C, 150 A at 70 °C. That thermal profile means you can size the breaker for a 160 A bus without oversizing the enclosure ventilation, as long as the internal ambient stays under 50 °C. Breaking capacity is specified per voltage level: 75.6 kA at 240 V AC, 52.5 kA at 415 V, 32 kA at 440 V, and 11.9 kA at both 500 V and 690 V. For a 480 V panel the relevant figure is the 440 V rating (32 kA) — the next step down in the standard voltage ladder. That gives you the SCCR headroom for most industrial distribution boards fed from a typical 1 MVA transformer.
TM240 release and line protection design
The overcurrent release is a TM240 thermal-magnetic type — fixed thermal pickup at 160 A (the breaker's frame rating) and magnetic instantaneous trip set at 240 A. That's a standard line-protection curve: the thermal element handles overloads with an inverse-time characteristic, the magnetic element clears short-circuits above 240 A. No undervoltage release, no shunt trip, no ground-fault monitoring on this variant — it's a straight feeder breaker for a distribution panel or a main disconnect in a motor control center. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V, which covers 690 V systems with margin. The auxiliary switch configuration is two HP-style switches — these are the standard form-C contacts for status indication back to a PLC or a panel lamp. No communication function, no voltage-triggered accessory; the breaker is purely electromechanical.
Physical fit and mounting
Dimensions: 130 mm height, 76.2 mm width, 70 mm depth. The 3-pole width (76.2 mm) matches the standard SENTRON 3VA1 frame footprint — it occupies three 25.4 mm pole spaces on a DIN rail or a mounting plate. Depth of 70 mm leaves clearance for rear-access wiring in a 200 mm deep enclosure. The basic switch supplied is order code 3VA11163EF320AA0, which is the internal switching mechanism; the complete breaker includes the TM240 release and the two auxiliary switches pre-assembled.
