SENTRON 3VA1116-5EE36-0AB0 — 160 A MCCB with TM220 Release
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA1116-5EE36-0AB0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker rated for 160 A continuous current (Iu) with a TM220 thermal-magnetic overcurrent release. It is configured as a line protection device, meaning it is sized for feeder and main distribution protection rather than motor or generator protection. The interrupting ratings are 187 kA at 240 V, 121 kA at 415 V, 76 kA at 440 V, and 17 kA at both 500 V and 690 V — these are the fault currents the breaker can safely clear without damage to itself or downstream equipment. The TM220 release provides fixed thermal and magnetic trip settings, so there are no field-adjustable dials for long-time or short-time pickup; the breaker trips on its factory-calibrated curve. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V, and the maximum DC operational voltage is 500 V. The breaker carries two HP auxiliary switches for status feedback to a PLC or annunciator panel. Front protection is IP40, suitable for enclosure mounting where tools are required to access the terminals. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage range is -40 °C to 80 °C.
Thermal Derating and Temperature Response
The 160 A rating holds at ambient temperatures up to 50 °C. Above that, the continuous current must be derated: 158 A at 55 °C, 155 A at 60 °C, 153 A at 65 °C, and 150 A at 70 °C. This is a standard thermal-magnetic characteristic — the bimetal element responds to both load current and ambient heat. In a hot panel near the top of a cabinet, expect the breaker to carry less than its nameplate 160 A before nuisance tripping becomes a risk.
Panel Fit and Dimensions
The breaker measures 130 mm in height, 3 in (76.2 mm) in width, and 2.8 in (71.1 mm) in depth. This is a standard 3-pole MCCB footprint for the 160 A frame size. It mounts via screw-clamp terminals on a DIN rail or direct panel-mount plate. The IP40 front means it can be installed in a dead-front enclosure with the handle protruding, but it is not rated for washdown or outdoor exposure without an additional enclosure.
