40 A MCCB with TM240 release — line protection for distribution panels
The SENTRON 3VA1140-3EF36-0AC0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker rated 40 A continuous at 40 °C, built around a TM240 thermal-magnetic overcurrent release. That TM240 designation means the thermal pickup is fixed at 40 A (the frame rating), with magnetic instantaneous trip set at 240 A — 6× the continuous rating, typical for feeder or branch-circuit protection where moderate inrush from lighting or small motor loads is expected. Interrupting capacity reaches 75.6 kA at 240 V, 52.5 kA at 415 V, and 32 kA at 440 V — figures that place it in the high-interrupting tier of the 3VA family. At 500 V and 690 V it holds 11.9 kA, so it handles industrial 480Y/277 V and 600 V class panels without upstream fusing in most installations. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V, and maximum power loss runs 10.8 W at rated current — a number to check against enclosure thermal rise if the panel is densely packed. The breaker carries two built-in HQ auxiliary switches for status feedback to a PLC or annunciator panel.
Mounting and integration — DIN-rail footprint for panel builds
The 3VA1140-3EF36-0AC0 measures 76.2 mm wide, 130 mm tall, and 70 mm deep — a standard 3-pole MCCB footprint that clips onto a DIN rail or mounts via the screw-on baseplate. The 70 mm depth is the body only; allow clearance for the handle throw and outgoing cable bends. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C, with a derating curve above 55 °C: 39 A at 55–60 °C, 38 A at 65 °C, 37 A at 70 °C. Storage range extends from -40 °C to 80 °C. No undervoltage release, no ground-fault monitoring, and no communication module on this variant — it is a straight line-protection breaker for panels where remote trip or GFCI is handled elsewhere.
