What this MCCB is and what it protects
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA1140-6EF32-0CC0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated 40 A at 40 °C, designed for line protection in industrial distribution panels. Its 220 kA breaking capacity at 240 V handles high-fault scenarios like transformer secondaries or large motor branch circuits without cascading upstream. The insulation voltage is rated 800 V, so it can sit in 480 V or 600 V panels with margin.
Breaking capacity across voltages
The interrupting rating drops as voltage rises: 154 kA at 415 V, 121 kA at 440 V, and 17 kA at 500 V and 690 V. At 690 V the 17 kA figure still covers most industrial loads, but verify against the available fault current at the installation point. The 220 kA at 240 V is typical for North American 240 V delta services.
Thermal derating and power loss
The breaker holds 40 A continuously up to 50 °C ambient. Above that it derates linearly to 37 A at 70 °C. Maximum power loss is 13.3 W — that heat must be considered in a sealed enclosure with other devices. Operating range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage range is -40 °C to 80 °C.
Auxiliary and undervoltage release configuration
This variant ships with two auxiliary switches (HQ type) and an undervoltage release (UVR). The UVR trips the breaker when control voltage drops — used in emergency-stop chains or upstream of a safety contactor. No ground-fault monitoring module is fitted, so external GFCI is needed if ground-fault protection is required.
Panel fit and dimensions
The breaker measures 130 mm high, 76.2 mm wide, and 70 mm deep. The 3-pole width is standard for a 3-pole MCCB on a DIN rail or panel-mount base. Verify the busbar or lug kit spacing against the existing panel layout — the 76.2 mm width matches the common 3-inch (76.2 mm) footprint for 3-pole MCCBs.
