MCCB for line protection with high interrupting capacity
The Siemens 3VA1140-6EF36-0DC0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) designed for line protection in distribution panels. Rated 40 A at 40 °C, it carries a 154 kA interrupting capacity at 415 V — sufficient for high-fault installations where upstream coordination demands a robust SCCR. The 3-pole unit includes an undervoltage release (UVR) and two HQ auxiliary switches, so it can signal trip status back to a PLC or safety circuit without an add-on module.
Breaking capacity across voltages
Interrupting rating drops with system voltage: 220 kA at 240 V, 154 kA at 415 V, 121 kA at 440 V, and 17 kA at both 500 V and 690 V. The 800 V rated insulation voltage (Ui) confirms the breaker is built for 690 V line-to-line applications, though the 17 kA ceiling at that level means it fits only moderate-fault 690 V panels. For a 480 V delta system the 121 kA at 440 V is the closest published figure — conservative coordination studies should use that value.
Thermal derating and power loss
The breaker holds 40 A continuously up to 50 °C ambient. Above that it derates gradually: 39 A at 55–60 °C, 38 A at 65 °C, 37 A at 70 °C. Maximum power dissipation is 13.3 W — relevant for enclosure heat calculations when several breakers are ganged. Operating range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage range extends from -40 °C to 80 °C.
Panel fit and dimensions
The breaker measures 130 mm high, 76.2 mm wide, and 70 mm deep — a standard 3-pole MCCB footprint that mounts on a DIN rail or directly to a backplate via the screw terminals. The 70 mm depth leaves clearance for wiring in a 200 mm deep enclosure. No communication module or ground-fault monitoring is integrated on this variant.
