Fixed 40 A, 4-pole MCCB with TM220 release
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA1140-6GE46-0AA0 is a 4-pole molded case circuit breaker with a fixed 40 A rating and a TM220 thermal-magnetic overcurrent release. The TM220 designation means the thermal element is fixed at 40 A (no adjustment range), and the magnetic short-circuit pickup is fixed at 20× the rated current — 800 A. This is a line-protection design, not a motor-protection or adjustable version, so it's suited for feeder circuits where the load current is known and stable. Breaking capacity varies sharply with system voltage: 220 kA at 240 V, 154 kA at 415 V, 121 kA at 440 V, and 17 kA at both 500 V and 690 V. At 690 V the 17 kA figure is the limiting factor — verify your available fault current at that voltage before specifying. The insulation voltage is rated 800 V, so the breaker itself is built for 690 V systems, but the interrupting rating drops off above 440 V.
Thermal derating and panel fit
The 40 A rating holds from 40 °C through 50 °C ambient. At 55 °C it derates to 39 A, at 65 °C to 38 A, and at 70 °C to 37 A. In a sealed enclosure or a high-temp panel, use the 70 °C column: 37 A continuous is the real limit. Power loss at full load is 10.8 W maximum — negligible for most enclosures but worth summing if you pack several breakers in a small box. Dimensions: 130 mm height, 101.6 mm width, 70 mm depth. The 70 mm depth is shallow enough for most 200 mm deep enclosures with room for wiring gutters. Width at 101.6 mm (4 inches) is standard for a 4-pole frame — it occupies four 25 mm module positions on a DIN rail, though this is a bolt-on or screw-mount MCCB, not a snap-on MCB. Verify the mounting pattern against your backplate.
Lifecycle and sourcing
The front face carries IP40 protection — suitable for dry indoor panels, not washdown or outdoor use. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage range is -40 °C to 80 °C. No undervoltage release, no communication function, no ground-fault monitoring on this variant — it's a straight thermal-magnetic line-protection breaker.
