What this MCCB carries — and what that means on the panel
The SENTRON 3VA1150-4EF36-0AE0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker rated for 50 A continuous current at 40 °C ambient, with a TM240 thermal-magnetic trip unit. That 50 A holds flat through 50 °C, then derates to 49 A at 55 °C, 48 A at 60 °C, 46 A at 65 °C, and 45 A at 70 °C — so if the panel runs hot, you still have headroom down to 45 A before the breaker nuisance-trips. The breaking capacity is 121 kA at 240 V AC, 75.6 kA at 415 V, 52.5 kA at 440 V, and 11.9 kA at both 500 V and 690 V. That 121 kA at 240 V tells you it can interrupt a bolted fault on a large transformer secondary without welding its contacts shut — the kind of fault current you see on a 1500 kVA pad-mount feeding a 480/277 V panel. The TM240 release means the thermal element tracks overloads on a 50 A frame, while the magnetic instantaneous trips at roughly 10× the rated current — so 500 A or so. That's a standard motor-starting profile, but verify your inrush against the magnetic pickup curve if you're feeding a high-efficiency motor with locked-rotor current near 8× FLA. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V, so the internal clearances are sized for 690 V line-to-line systems without derating the dielectric. This is a line-protection design — no undervoltage release, no ground-fault monitoring, no communication module. It's a straight thermal-magnetic breaker for feeder or branch protection. The 14.6 W maximum power loss matters for panel thermal calculations: if you pack six of these in a row, that's nearly 90 W of heat inside the enclosure that the ventilation has to clear.
Panel fit — dimensions and mounting
The 3VA1150-4EF36-0AE0 measures 70 mm deep, 76.2 mm wide, and 130 mm tall. That 76.2 mm width is exactly 3 inches — standard for a 3-pole 50 A frame MCCB in a Siemens panelboard or a separate enclosure. The 70 mm depth means it clears the backpan of a 6-inch deep enclosure with room for rear-connected bus bars. Mounting is via the standard 3VA screw-clamp or plug-in base; no DIN-rail adapter for this frame size — it bolts to the panel or clips into the SENTRON distribution block.
How it compares to the 3VA1110-5ED36-0AC0
The 3VA1110-5ED36-0AC0 is a 3-pole 100 A frame with an electronic ETU release, compared to this 50 A thermal-magnetic TM240. The 3VA1110 is physically larger — 90 mm wide versus 76.2 mm — so it will not drop into the same panel cutout or bus-bar spacing without re-drilling the mounting holes. The breaking capacities also differ: the 100 A frame typically carries lower interrupting ratings at the same voltage because the higher continuous rating stresses the arc chamber. If your BOM calls for a 50 A line-protection breaker, the 3VA1150-4EF36-0AE0 is the correct fit; the 3VA1110-5ED36-0AC0 would require re-wiring the bus and re-coordinating the downstream devices.
