80 A, 4-pole MCCB with 121 kA interrupting capacity
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA1180-4GF42-0AA0 is a 4-pole molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for 80 A continuous current at 40 °C, with a TM240 thermal-magnetic release. Its interrupting capacity reaches 121 kA at 240 V and 75.6 kA at 415 V, which means it can safely clear high-fault currents in low-voltage distribution without upstream damage. The 800 V rated insulation voltage (Ui) supports use in 480/277 V and 600 V systems with adequate margin. The 70 mm depth and 101.6 mm width fit standard panel-mount cutouts for 4-pole MCCBs. Front protection is IP40, so it tolerates tool contact but not water ingress — install inside a rated enclosure for wet environments.
Thermal derating and DC capability
The 80 A rating holds steady up to 50 °C ambient. Above that, derating is gradual: 78 A at 55 °C, 77 A at 60 °C, 75 A at 65 °C, and 74 A at 70 °C. If the panel runs hot, the effective continuous current drops by about 7.5% at the top of the operating range. Maximum power loss is 19.2 W per pole — factor that into enclosure thermal calculations. For DC circuits, the maximum rated operational voltage is 600 V DC. The interrupting ratings at 500 V and 690 V AC are both 11.9 kA, so the breaker handles standard 400 V-class motor branch circuits with typical fault levels.
Panel integration notes
The 4-pole design with 100% N-conductor protection means the neutral pole is fully rated and switches with the phases — no derating needed for the neutral path. The TM240 release is thermal-magnetic: the thermal element handles overloads up to the trip curve, and the magnetic element responds to short-circuit currents. No communication function is built in; if remote monitoring is required, the optional motor drive (Product Extension / Optional / Motor Drive: Yes) allows remote open/close via a separate actuator. Storage temperature range is -40 °C to 80 °C; operating range is -25 °C to 70 °C. The storage minimum is the binding limit for cold warehouse conditions — the breaker can sit in unheated storage without damage.
