80 A, 4-pole MCCB with TM240 release — line protection for high-fault panels
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA1180-5GF46-0AA0 is a 4-pole molded case circuit breaker rated 80 A continuous, designed for line protection in distribution panels. Its TM240 thermal-magnetic release provides fixed overload and short-circuit curves — no trip indicator, no undervoltage release, no communication function. This is a straight line-protection breaker: feed it, protect the bus, move on. Interrupting capacity is the headline here: 187 kA at 240 V AC, 121 kA at 415 V, 75.6 kA at 440 V, and still 17 kA at 690 V. That 187 kA figure at 240 V means it handles high-fault scenarios common on large transformer secondaries or industrial service entrances — not a standard branch breaker. The 4-pole configuration covers three-phase-plus-neutral or dual-supply switching where full isolation is required. Thermal derating is minimal up to 50 °C — still 80 A — then drops to 78 A at 55 °C, 77 A at 60 °C, 75 A at 65 °C, and 74 A at 70 °C. That flat curve through 50 °C means it holds full rating in most ventilated enclosures; only tight, hot cabinets force a derate. Max power loss is 19.2 W, so heat dissipation inside the panel is manageable.
Panel fit — footprint and mounting
The 3VA1180-5GF46-0AA0 measures 70 mm deep, 101.6 mm wide, 130 mm tall. That 101.6 mm width (4 inches) is the standard 4-pole MCCB footprint — it occupies four 25 mm module spaces on a DIN rail or mounts directly to a backplate via the screw terminals. IP40 on the front means it's protected against tools and wires >1 mm, but not against water ingress; keep it inside the enclosure.
