Breaking capacity across voltages
The 3VA1196-4EF36-0AC0: This MCCB delivers 121 kA at 240 V AC, 75.6 kA at 415 V, 52.5 kA at 440 V, and 11.9 kA at 690 V. That spread covers most low-voltage distribution panels in North America (240/480 V) and Europe (400/690 V). For a 16 A frame, the 75.6 kA at 415 V gives you selectivity headroom against upstream devices without oversizing the feeder.
Thermal derating — what the numbers mean
The 16 A rating holds up to 50 °C ambient. Above that it steps down: 15.36 A at 55 °C, 15.04 A at 60 °C, 14.72 A at 65 °C, 14.4 A at 70 °C. If your panel runs hot — say a non-ventilated enclosure near a furnace line — size the load at 14.4 A continuous to stay inside the curve. The TM240 release is fixed, not adjustable, so the derating is your only margin.
Panel fit and footprint
The 3VA1196-4EF36-0AC0 measures 76.2 mm wide, 130 mm tall, and 70 mm deep. It mounts on a DIN rail or directly to a backplate. The 76.2 mm width (roughly 3 inches) is standard for a 3-pole MCCB in this class; it fits alongside other SENTRON 3VA devices in a common distribution block without odd spacing.
Auxiliary contacts and protection class
The breaker comes with 2 auxiliary switches (HQ type) built in — no separate add-on module needed for status feedback to a PLC or alarm panel. The front face carries IP40 protection, which is typical for enclosed panel-mount gear; it is not rated for washdown or outdoor exposure.
