What it is and what the ratings mean for the panel
The Siemens 3VA1196-5EF36-0BC0 is a 3-pole SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for line protection — the main feed breaker in a distribution panel or a branch-circuit protector on a heavy load. Its 16 A continuous rating holds flat from 40 °C through 50 °C; above that it derates smoothly to 14.4 A at 70 °C, so if the panel runs hot near the top of the enclosure you lose about 1.6 A of headroom, not the whole rating. The interrupting capacity is the headline number here: 187 kA at 240 V, 121 kA at 415 V, tapering to 17 kA at 690 V. Those are serious fault-clearing numbers — this breaker can sit upstream of a high-fault transformer or a large motor drive without needing a current-limiting fuse ahead of it. The TM240 thermal-magnetic trip unit handles overloads and short-circuits with a fixed thermal curve and magnetic pickup, no electronic adjustment.
Panel fit and mounting
At 70 mm deep by 76.2 mm wide by 130 mm tall, this MCCB fits a standard DIN-rail or screw-mount footprint common in SENTRON distribution boards. The IP40 rating on the front means it's protected against tools and wires over 1 mm — fine inside a closed panel, but don't mount it where washdown or rain hits the face. The 2 auxiliary switches (HQ type) are built in, giving you two independent status signals for the PLC or annunciator without adding an external block. The undervoltage release (UVR) is also integrated — if the control voltage drops, the breaker trips; useful for emergency-stop chains or undervoltage protection on a motor feeder.
