What it is and what it does
The Siemens 3VA2040-7HL32-0AA0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for 40 A continuous current, with an adjustable overload range from 60 A minimum to 480 A maximum — so it's sized for feeder or large motor branch protection where you need coordination flexibility, not a fixed thermal trip. It's a 3-pole unit with an ETU320 electronic trip unit, meaning you get adjustable long-time, short-time, and instantaneous pickup settings — useful for selective coordination downstream of a main breaker or upstream of motor starters. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V.
Breaking capacity — where it interrupts
This MCCB delivers 330 kA at 240 V, 242 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 187 kA at 500 V, and 3 kA at 690 V. That 330 kA at 240 V is the headline number — it handles high available fault current on the secondary side of a distribution transformer without needing a current-limiting fuse upstream. The steep drop to 3 kA at 690 V means this is really a 480 V / 600 V class breaker; don't spec it for 690 V applications unless the fault current is well under 3 kA.
Mounting and environment
Dimensions are 105 mm wide, 181 mm tall, 86 mm deep — standard SENTRON 3VA2 footprint for a 3-pole frame. Bolts into a panel or mounts on a mounting plate; no DIN rail on this frame size. IP40 on the front means it's protected against tools and wires >1 mm, but not against dust ingress — keep it inside a closed panel, not in a washdown zone. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C, and the continuous 40 A rating holds across the full range — no derating needed up to 70 °C ambient.
