What the 160 A rating and 330 kA interrupting capacity mean for your panel
The Siemens 3VA2116-7HL32-0AF0 is a 3-pole SENTRON molded case circuit breaker rated for 160 A continuous current across the full ambient range from 40 °C to 70 °C — no derating needed up to the 70 °C operating maximum. That 160 A holds steady through the entire temperature band, which simplifies panel sizing when the enclosure sits near warm machinery or in a non-conditioned electrical room. The interrupting capacity is the headline number for fault protection: 330 kA at 240 V AC, 242 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 187 kA at 500 V, and 3.8 kA at 690 V. That 330 kA figure at 240 V is high enough for most industrial service-entrance or large sub-distribution applications where available fault current can exceed 200 kA near a transformer secondary. The drop to 3.8 kA at 690 V is expected for this frame size — the breaker is primarily designed for 240–500 V distribution, not 690 V motor circuits. The ETU320 electronic trip unit gives you adjustable long-time pickup (Ig) from 160 A fixed, short-time pickup (Ii) adjustable up to 1,600 A, and adjustable time delays (tr) from 0.5 to 17 seconds. That adjustability lets you coordinate selectively with downstream feeders — you can set the short-time delay long enough to ride through a downstream fault without tripping the main. No communication function on this variant; it's a standalone line-protection breaker.
Lifecycle and sourcing — current production, quoted to order
The SENTRON 3VA platform is Siemens' current-generation MCCB family, replacing the older 3VL series. The ETU320 release is a standard electronic trip unit found across multiple 3VA frame sizes, so firmware and accessory commonality (motor operators, shunt trips, auxiliary contacts) is shared within the family. The IP40 front protection is typical for panel-mounted breakers — the enclosure provides the additional ingress protection for the busbar compartment.
Panel fit and dimensions
The breaker measures 105 mm wide by 181 mm tall by 86 mm deep. That 105 mm width (about 4.1 inches) is the standard 3VA frame width for this current rating — it occupies a single 105 mm-wide slot in a Siemens panelboard or switchboard. The 86 mm depth includes the arc-chamber housing but not the operating handle projection; account for handle clearance when laying out the enclosure door. The 25.5 W maximum power loss at rated current should be factored into the enclosure thermal budget, especially in a sealed or low-ventilation panel.
