What this 160 A MCCB delivers
The Siemens 3VA2116-8KQ36-0AA0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker rated for 160 A continuous current across the full ambient range from 40 °C to 70 °C — no derating needed up to that ceiling. Three poles, ETU860 electronic trip unit with communication function built in. The interrupting ratings are the headline: 440 kA at 240 V, 330 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 220 kA at 500 V, and 53 kA at 690 V. That puts it in the high-breaking-capacity class for industrial main feeders and large sub-distribution where fault currents are severe.
What the ratings mean for your panel
The 440 kA at 240 V is the maximum short-circuit current the breaker can safely interrupt at that voltage level — critical for switchboards close to a large transformer where available fault current is high. The 330 kA at 415 V and 440 V covers common industrial three-phase supplies. At 690 V the rating drops to 53 kA, still substantial for most installations. The 160 A rating is flat from 40 °C to 70 °C, so you don't need to oversize for a hot panel environment. Power loss is 19.7 W maximum, manageable for thermal coordination inside the enclosure. The ETU860 electronic trip unit gives you adjustable response times: tr from 0.5 to 20 seconds, tsd up to 0.5 s. That allows selectivity coordination with downstream breakers — you can delay the trip long enough for a branch breaker to clear a fault without taking the main feeder offline. The communication function means it can report status and trip events to a BMS or PLC, useful for remote monitoring in larger facilities.
Physical fit and mounting
Dimensions are 181 mm height, 105 mm width, 86 mm depth. That's a 3-pole frame that fits standard SENTRON mounting patterns in distribution panels. IP40 on the front means protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm — fine for indoor switchgear, but not for washdown areas. Operating temperature range is -40 °C to 70 °C, storage from -40 °C to 80 °C, so it handles cold storage or unheated electrical rooms without issue.
