What this MCCB delivers — and where the ratings matter
The Siemens 3VA2163-5JP42-0AA0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) designed for line protection in distribution panels. Its 63 A continuous rating holds flat from 40 °C through 70 °C — no derating curve to track across a warm enclosure. The 4-pole configuration covers three-phase-plus-neutral circuits, common in North American and IEC distribution where the neutral needs overcurrent protection. The ETU550 electronic trip unit provides adjustable protection curves. This variant ships without ground-fault monitoring. Breaking capacity is the headline number that decides whether this breaker clears a fault or welds shut. At 240 V it interrupts 187 kA — enough for most service-entrance positions on a 480Y/277 V transformer secondary. At 415 V it still holds 121 kA, and at 500 V it manages 75.6 kA. Panel fit and integration
The 3VA2163 frame measures 140 mm wide, 181 mm tall, and 86 mm deep. Communication function is built in (the '5JP42' segment indicates PROFIBUS or similar fieldbus integration capability), so the breaker can report status and trip events to a higher-level control system without an add-on module. The ETU550 also supports energy metering data via the communication interface — useful for submetering a feeder without a separate meter.
