What it is and what it does
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA2163-6HL36-0AA0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for 63 A continuous current, built around the ETU320 electronic overcurrent release. It's designed for line protection in distribution panels — think main feeder or large subfeed protection where you need adjustable trip curves and high fault-clearing capacity. The interrupting ratings tell the real story: 242 kA at 240 V, 187 kA at 415 V, 121 kA at 500 V, and 3.7 kA at 690 V. That 242 kA figure at 240 V is massive — it means this breaker can safely clear a fault at a major service entrance without upstream fuses or a bigger frame. At 690 V the rating drops sharply to 3.7 kA, so it's not a universal high-voltage breaker, but at typical 400/480 V distribution levels it's still well into the 187 kA range, which covers most industrial service-entrance and subfeed applications. The ETU320 trip unit gives you adjustable thermal-magnetic or electronic curve shaping — you can dial in long-time, short-time, and instantaneous pickup to coordinate with downstream breakers. No undervoltage release, no ground-fault monitoring, no communication function on this variant; it's a straight line-protection breaker.
Panel fit and environment
Dimensions: 181 mm high, 105 mm wide, 86 mm deep. Front IP40 protection. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C, and the continuous current rating holds at 63 A across the full temperature range from 40 °C to 70 °C — no derating needed up to 70 °C ambient. Storage range is -40 °C to 80 °C. Power loss is a modest 4 W maximum, so heat buildup in a dense panel isn't a concern.
