What this MCCB is and what it does
The Siemens 3VA2163-7MS36-0HH0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) designed for starter protection — meaning it's built to sit ahead of a motor starter combination and handle the high inrush without nuisance tripping, while still clearing a bolted fault. Three poles, rated 63 A continuous at up to 70 °C ambient without derating (– confirm the full 63 A holds across the 40–70 °C range), so no temperature correction factor needed in a warm enclosure. The adjustable thermal-magnetic trip unit covers 189 A minimum to 945 A maximum — that's a 5:1 adjustment band, giving flexibility to match the motor full-load current without swapping the breaker. Breaking capacity is the headline number for a panel builder doing fault coordination: 330 kA at 240 V AC, 242 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 187 kA at 500 V, and 3.7 kA at 690 V. That 330 kA at 240 V is exceptionally high for a 63 A frame — it tells you this breaker is intended for high-fault locations (transformer secondary, large bus riser) where the available fault current is well above typical distribution panel levels. The steep drop to 3.7 kA at 690 V is normal for this class; the 690 V rating is more of a withstand rating for isolation than a clearing rating you'd rely on.
Auxiliary and control wiring
Factory-fitted with 2 auxiliary switches plus 1 trip alarm switch (HQ type) and a shunt trip release (STL). The shunt trip lets you remotely trip the breaker from a PLC or E-stop circuit — common for emergency-off chains where the MCCB is the main disconnecting means. The trip alarm switch changes state only when the breaker trips on fault (not on manual off), which is useful for remote fault annunciation. No undervoltage release fitted, so if you need UVR for a safety circuit, that's a field-add option. No communication module or phase-failure detection onboard — this is a straight electromechanical MCCB, not a smart breaker. If you need power monitoring or remote reset, you'd add the 3VA communication module externally. The basic switch variant is 3VA2163-7MS36-0AA0 — the -0HH0 suffix adds the shunt trip and auxiliary switches.
Physical fit and panel integration
Dimensions: 105 mm wide, 181 mm tall, 86 mm deep. That 105 mm width is standard for a 3-pole 63 A MCCB frame — it occupies three 35 mm DIN spaces plus a bit for the case overhang. Depth of 86 mm means it clears most 200 mm deep enclosures with room for rear bus connections. The trip indicator and voltage trigger are present, so you get a mechanical flag and a separate output for remote trip indication.
