What it is and what it does
The Siemens 3VA2450-5MN32-0DL0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) designed specifically for motor protection. It is a 3-pole unit rated 500 A at 40 °C, with a continuous current rating that holds at 500 A up to 50 °C, then derates to 495 A at 55 °C, 490 A at 60 °C, 485 A at 65 °C, and 480 A at 70 °C — so for panels running warm, the effective ampacity is the 55 °C or 60 °C line, not the 40 °C headline. Breaking capacity varies sharply with system voltage: 187 kA at 240 V, 121 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 75.6 kA at 500 V, and 9 kA at 690 V. That 9 kA at 690 V is the limiting case — if your line side feeds a 690 V distribution, the available fault current must be below that figure or you need an upstream current-limiting device. Built-in phase failure detection and an undervoltage release are standard on this variant, so it handles the two most common motor-protection trip conditions without add-on modules. The auxiliary switch complement is 2 auxiliary switches + 1 trip alarm switch + 1 electrical alarm switch HQ, enough for remote status and fault annunciation on a typical MCC bucket.
Panel fit and dimensions
Dimensions: 248 mm height, 138 mm width, 110 mm depth. The 138 mm width is the standard 3-pole MCCB footprint for this SENTRON frame — it fits the same panel cutout and bus-bar spacing as other 3VA frame-size breakers. Depth of 110 mm leaves clearance behind the panel for wiring and the undervoltage release coil.
Thermal and storage limits
Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage range is -40 °C to 80 °C. Maximum power loss is 101.5 W — relevant for thermal management inside a sealed enclosure. If the panel also contains drives or transformers, factor this into the cooling calculation.
