Line protection with ETU850 — 500 A continuous, 330 kA interrupting at 240 V
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA2450-7KP32-0AA0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for 500 A continuous current (Iu) at 40 °C, with the ETU850 electronic trip unit providing adjustable overcurrent protection. This is the line protection version — meaning it is configured for feeder and main breaker duty, not motor branch circuit protection. The interrupting capacity reaches 330 kA at 240 V and remains at 242 kA at 415 V and 440 V, tapering to 187 kA at 500 V and 9 kA at 690 V. Those numbers tell you this breaker is designed for high-fault locations: main switchboards, transformer secondaries, or large distribution panels where available fault current is substantial.
Thermal derating and panel integration
The 500 A rating holds flat from 40 °C through 50 °C ambient. Above that, derate to 477 A at 55 °C, 455 A at 60 °C, 432 A at 65 °C, and 410 A at 70 °C. If this breaker lives in a non-air-conditioned electrical room or a switchgear lineup with high internal heat rise, the 55–60 °C row is the one that governs your actual ampacity — not the nameplate 500 A. The enclosure footprint is 248 mm high × 138 mm wide × 110 mm deep, which fits standard SENTRON 3VA panel cutouts. IP40 on the front means it is splash-protected from the operator side but not sealed against dust ingress into the enclosure; the back and sides rely on the panel enclosure for environmental protection.
Communication and measurement capability
This breaker includes communication function and other measurement function — the ETU850 supports optional communication modules (PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus) for power monitoring and remote trip indication. That makes it suitable for a metered distribution board where you want energy data per feeder without a separate power meter. The electronic trip unit also provides adjustable time-current curves (tr max. 20 s) for coordination with downstream breakers.
